Hong Kong's International Baccalaureate (IB) community is celebrating a historic year. At least 63 students from 15 local schools achieved the perfect score of 45 in the 2026 IB Diploma Programme examinations. This remarkable achievement significantly surpasses last year's tally of 31 top scorers, highlighting the city's continued academic excellence on the world stage.

Who Topped the Rankings? The 2026 results saw exceptional performances across several schools, with records being broken and new benchmarks set.

Victoria Shanghai Academy (VSA), a private independent school, led the pack with a record-breaking nine perfect scorers. This marks the school's best performance in history, with nearly half of its cohort scoring 40 points or above and an impressive average score of 39.

The English Schools Foundation (ESF) network once again demonstrated its strength, with its seven secondary schools producing a combined total of 27 perfect scorers . Their students achieved an average score of 36.4, significantly outperforming the global average. Notably, 31.5% of ESF candidates scored 40 points or higher.

Other top-performing schools included:

  • St. Paul's Co-educational College and Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School both recorded six perfect scorers each .

  • St. Stephen's College, a Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) school, achieved its best-ever result with five top scorers, surpassing its previous record of three .

  • Diocesan Boys' School also celebrated five perfect scorers, with 16 students achieving 44 points .

  • Canadian International School of Hong Kong produced three perfect scorers, and its graduates have received over 1,000 university offers, including from Cambridge and Cornell, with scholarships totalling HK$28 million.

Hong Kong's Global Standing

These outstanding results solidify Hong Kong's position as a powerhouse in international education. Last year, Hong Kong students achieved an average IB score of 36.72, far exceeding the global average of 30.58 . This year's record-breaking numbers continue to demonstrate that trend, reinforcing the high standards of the city's international schools.

What This Means for Parents

While achieving a perfect score is a remarkable feat, the data also highlights that many schools with top-tier IB programmes consistently produce high-calibre graduates. For parents considering the IB pathway, the 2026 results show that schools like VSA, ESF, St. Paul's Co-educational College, and others in the top rankings provide a proven track record of academic excellence.

It's also important to look beyond the "perfect score" headline. Schools like Canadian International School reported that 48% of their graduates scored 40 points or above, demonstrating a broad base of high-achieving students. The diverse and outstanding university destinations - from Cambridge and Columbia to HKU and CUHK - also confirm the global recognition and portability of the IB diploma in Hong Kong .

The 2026 IB results are a testament to the dedication of students, the quality of teaching, and the strength of Hong Kong's international education system. For families planning their children's educational future, these results provide valuable benchmarks and a clear picture of which schools are consistently delivering world-class outcomes.
