At Lion Rock Education, our conversations with parents are at the heart of what we do. We understand that navigating Hong Kong’s school admissions can feel overwhelming, and it’s normal to have concerns.
Over the years, we’ve noticed that many families share similar worries. You are not alone. In this article, we address some of the most frequent questions we receive, hoping our advice brings you clarity and confidence.
Q1: "My child is very shy and quiet. Will this hurt their chances in the interview?"
This is one of our most common questions, and the answer is often a reassurance. Schools aren’t looking exclusively for the loudest or most outgoing child. They are looking for a child who is engaged.
Our Advice: Focus on readiness, not personality. We help parents practice turn-taking activities and listening skills at home. We also coach families on how to frame their child’s quiet nature as a strength—highlighting their ability to focus, observe, and listen carefully. A calm, prepared child who can make eye contact and answer politely, even softly, can make a very positive impression.
Q2: "We are not native English speakers. Will our child be at a disadvantage for international schools?"
It is true that international schools teach in English, but they are accustomed to welcoming students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The key is demonstrating progress and potential, not perfection.
Our Advice: Don't panic. Focus on creating an English-rich environment naturally. Read English storybooks together daily, watch age-appropriate English programs, and encourage playful use of the language. The goal is to show that your child can understand basic instructions and is comfortable in an English-language environment, not that they are already fluent.
Q3: "We started the admissions process late. Have we missed our chance?"
While being early is ideal, starting "late" does not mean all doors are closed. The admissions landscape in Hong Kong is dynamic, with waitlists that can move and new opportunities that arise.
Our Advice: This is where a strategic approach is crucial. We help families identify schools that may still have availability, craft compelling applications that stand out immediately, and master the art of the effective waitlist follow-up. Persistence and a well-targeted strategy can yield excellent results, even on a tighter timeline.
Q4: "The application asks about our 'family philosophy.' What are they really looking for?"
This question can be daunting, but it’s a golden opportunity. Schools ask this to see if your family’s values and parenting style align with their educational ethos. They are building a community, not just a student body.
Our Advice: Be authentic, not aspirational. Instead of guessing what they want to hear, reflect on what you truly value. Is it resilience? Curiosity? Kindness? Share a brief, genuine story that illustrates that value in action. We help parents articulate their philosophy in a way that resonates with a school’s specific mission.
Every family’s journey is unique, but the underlying worries are often shared. The key is to transform that anxiety into a proactive, well-informed strategy.
